I want to keep you Current. Global millennials have something to say, which is why I’m launching Current on Friday, December 10th.

What is Current? Current is a bilingual web series and podcast that takes a closer look at the millennial generation. Over the course of eight episodes, the series explores work culture, capitalism, the representation of youth in the media, as well as dating and relationships.

I am Whitney. I was born in New York, and divided my time between New York and Florida growing up. I studied Television, Film and Public Policy at Syracuse University. I’ve always been particularly interested in questioning societal norms and expectations and my professional experience in New York was rooted in producing before I moved to Paris, where I’ve lived for the past four years while completing my master’s program in Production Audiovisuelle.

I was the only non-native French speaker in my cohort and experienced first-hand the difficulty in having deeper and more complex conversations with my French classmates and community. In Paris, I have two identities, the American version of myself, and the French version. I typically get to choose who I want to be in a given moment, but what if I could find a space where I can exist in my duality?

After finishing my master’s program in 2019, I wrote a pitch for a web series and sent it to my former professor, who was interested in helping me produce the initial pilot. Unfortunately, COVID-19 delayed our schedule and so I pivoted, and started the series as a podcast.

In the summer of 2021, with COVID-19 at bay, I was finally able to move forward with the first season of the web series. By self-financing, I was able to find a group of amazing people that believed in the project and my production assistant, Lauren, and I casted twenty-five people. The exchanges that happened on and off set were exactly what I had envisioned, resulting in four conversations in English, and four in French. The podcast consists of the full conversations, while the web series is a shorter version of each podcast.

The goal of Current is sharing the stories of the global millennial generation, but it’s also about creating community. As an expat, this is one of the biggest elements of really thriving in a host country. We all want to find our people, but what if your person is unable to fully express themselves in your native language? I want to open that door and bridge the gap between the barriers of communication.

It was a phenomenal learning experience and joy to work on Current from conception to completion and to have built a creative community in the process. Current will be available on YouTube and wherever podcasts can be found.
